In 1936 werd Gerrit Schulte, samen met Piet Gommans en anderen uitgezonden naar Berlijn voor de Olympische Spelen. In datzelfde jaar nam hij, als amateur, maar liefst acht maal de zege in ontvangst: de Omloop van Twente, Antwerpen, Dunlop's Jubilee, Zürich, Lyon, de Ronde van Purmerend, het kriterium van Alkmaar en de Ronde van Haarlemmermeer. In 1937 waren het er 15. In 1938 wint hij 'n etappe van de Tour de France. De jaren daarna is het een ketting van zeges en vooraanstaande plaatsingen. Op 26 februari 1992 kreeg hij een hartstilstand toen hij samen met zijn vrouw in de tuin aan het werk was.
